English KS3

In KS3 English we will be continuing to focus on the development of English Language, English Literature and Creative Writing skills. Using drama, discussion, hands on games, creativity and humour the kids will be encouraged to enjoy their learning and improve their personal writing skills, including spelling, punctuation and grammar. The theme for this block will be William Shakespeare and will concentrate on both his poetry and his plays. I intend to start the course with the most accessible play – Macbeth - and then move on to a comedy, history and a problem play. We will not only be looking at the original text but also at a play I wrote myself based on a trial of Macbeth in hell entitled, ‘Macbeth – Traitor?’ We will be studying ways in which Shakespeare gathered ideas from a variety of sources including the Roman writers, and reading the plays, performing scenes, learning to comment on texts, and working on developing our own writing skills, in different genres.

Later in the year, we will be looking at how Shakespeare has been adapted for film makers and how he has been used as a huge tourist attraction in both Stratford on Avon and London. This will involve looking at non-fiction texts such as tourist guides, reports, newspapers and adverts.
